Encompassing over 11,000 acres in Appanoose County is the popular vacation destination, Rathbun Lake. It is considered the largest lake in the state of Iowa and has more than enough room with 155 miles of shoreline.

Rathbun Lake was created in the 1960s for drinking water supply, recreation, fish and wildlife habitat, flood damage reduction, downstream water quality improvement, and storage for supplementing navigational flows.

Known For Its Lake Recreation

Boating, fishing, and sailing are some of the more popular sports enjoyed on Rathbun Lake. Other activities such as skiing, swimming, windsurfing, kayaking, and canoeing can be done on Rathbun Lake.

Rathbun Lake has many convenient locations for boaters, including a couple of marinas and several boat ramps.

The lake is a hot spot for fishing because it has the largest warm-water fish hatchery. The fishery produces channel catfish, walleye, saugeye, and largemouth bass. You can also find crappies in Rathbun Lake.

There are several parks along the shore of Rathbun Lake, including Honey Creek State Park, Buck Creek Park, Outlet Park, Island View Park, Rathbun State Wildlife Area, and Bridgeview Recreation Area. These make perfect places to get some exercise in the great outdoors.
