Missouri is the 18th most populous state in the United States and is almost directly in the center of the nation. The state played a major role in the westward expansion of the U.S. with the Oregon Trail, Pont Express, Santa Fe Trail, and the California Trail all beginning here. Missouri's nickname is the "Show Me State", as Missourians are known for being skeptical.
Missouri is landlocked by eight other states, including Tennessee which also shares borders with eight other states. These two states touch more states than any others in the U.S. To be so tightly landlocked, Missouri offers a surprising amount of waterfront real estate. That is because the state has a total of 568 lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. Not to mention, Missouri is hugged by the Mississippi River to the east and is dissected through the middle by the Missouri River.
Missouri is home to numerous large lakes that have thousands of acres of water and miles of shoreline for everyone to play on. One of the state's biggest and busiest reservoirs is Lake of the Ozarks, located in the center of the state. This reservoir was created in 1931 and is approximately 55,000 acres with 1,150 miles of shoreline. Table Rock Lake also boasts an impressive surface area of 43,000 acres and 745 miles of shoreline. Missouri's largest man-made lake goes to Harry S. Truman Reservoir which is 55,600 acres. These lakes are surrounded by parks, restaurants, and breathtaking views the whole family will enjoy.
Missouri has several lakes that are ideal for water sports that involve being directly on the water such as windsurfing and paddleboarding. Stockton Lake is known for its coves and inlets which make it the perfect lake for sailing and, kiteboarding, and windsurfing. Lake Jacomo is a popular destination for pabddleboarding, windsurfing, kayaking, and enjoying a leisurely ride in a pontoon boat. Lake Jacomo is also home to the largest marina in the Kansas City area.
