When the lake was bought from the Ojibwe tribe of Native Americans in the late 19th century, droves of white pine were discovered around the lake, and soon it sprang to life as a logging town. Over the next century, the logging industry fizzled out, and the population reduced. In modern times, Chippewa Township is known as a serene lake home retreat.
