Big Spirit Lake (also known as Spirit Lake) covers nearly 5,700 acres of surface area, with 16 miles of partially developed shoreline that features endless breathtaking views.

The lake reaches depths of up to 24 feet, this lake is accepted as the largest natural lake in the state of Iowa.

Great Location and History

Spirit Lake is located in Dickinson County and is surrounded by the cities of Orleans, Milford and Spencer. The lake is only 15 miles from I-90 and a short 40-minute drive to Spencer.

Spirit Lake was named by the Dakota Native Americans, who believed the lake was guarded with spirits. When the Native Americans initially named the lake, it was called "Minnewaukon" and was also called "Lac D'espirit" by French explorers, both meaning "Lake of Spirits."
